Self-Sufficiency in New Zealand
Self-sufficiency is a vital goal for New Zealand. Fortress New Zealand sets out three fundamental requirements for our future safety and security, which we call the three ‘F’s: Food, Fuel and Defence! Self-sufficiency is important because people who cannot feed themselves are not free people – they are slaves. Along with a good water supply, food is the next essential for sustaining life. There are at least three good reasons why we should produce our own food:
1 Importing food from a distance is no longer feasible because it involves unsustainable food miles
2 Not growing one’s own food leaves people in a vulnerable position, being dependent on the good will of the prime producers
3 Local self-sufficient food production builds a viable community and maximises the use of available resources in a cost-effective way
Fortress New Zealand argues that this basic model of local markets is the only truly workable method of food production for the future, returning to a more historically traditional and proven pattern that sustained our ancestors for centuries.
