National & Local Government of New Zealand
To a considerable extent, Fortress New Zealand sees national and local government as the source of many of our problems. People get the national and local government they deserve; governments assume those responsibilities which communities fail to take care of themselves. Unfortunately, given that the wrong sort of people invariably strive for bureaucratic power, the bureaucracy eventually becomes a huge parasite, feeding off the wealth of the people, but giving little or nothing in return. Sad to say, this is the state of affairs at which we have now arrived in most countries in the world today – even the less developed ones.
As New Zealanders, we have the task of insisting that our government serves the interests of the people who elected it, not its own narrow self-interest in perpetuating its monopoly on power. Only if we can force the government to act as the servant of the people, and not our master, that we will succeed in achieving concerted constructive action towards important changes required for our survival. The less attractive option is to allow the country to disintegrate into a disparate assortment of petty fiefdoms and warring factions.
