Rising Sea Levels around New Zealand
Rising sea levels are a serious danger because the Arctic and Antarctic polar ice caps are already starting to melt at an alarming and irreversible rate. Fortress New Zealand argues that current projections concerning rising sea levels are dangerously optimistic and under-estimate the potential damage that may be caused within the next century.
Ultimately sea levels will continue to rise for centuries now, and the only unanswered question is how rapidly that process will occur. An intelligent guess might be five metres per century. This poses massive problems for low-lying cities and coastal land around the country. Several of our major towns are going to be completely submerged in time.
Fortress New Zealand also points out that the warming of the oceans creates more violent weather patterns, so that we must expect more dangerous climatic events in future years. Regretably this process threatens all marine life, and we may face the added disaster of losing the invaluable supply of food we get from ocean fish stocks.
